A clinical manual of mental diseases.Group IV--The neurasthenic-neuropathic disorders (psychasthenia).

A clinical manual of mental diseases.: Group IV--The neurasthenic-neuropathic disorders... This chapter focuses on neurasthenic and neuropathic disorders. The phenomena presented by neurasthenia naturally resolve themselves into motor, sensory, general somatic, and psychic symptoms. After describing general symptoms, the author turns to the psychic symptoms in neurasthenic-neuropathic mental disease. To these are added special symptoms in various clinical forms: (1) the insanity of special fears (phobias, obsessions, anxiety psychosis; (2) the insanity of indecision; (3) the insanity of deficient inhibition; and (4) the insanity of deficient will. Each of these forms or symptom groups has its prototype in the psychic phenomena present in ordinary neurasthenia. The author also provides general considerations on the disease course and prognosis of the disorders.
