A hospital practice primer for psychologists.: The hospital organization: Psychological services... Although many psychologists are well trained in providing psychological services, they may not be knowledgeable about the hospital context within which these services can be provided. The purpose of this chapter is to address the need of many psychologists working in hospitals to better understand this environment so that they might function more effectively in this special health care setting. This chapter provides (1) a description of the structure and operation of a hospital, (2) a review of the structures and functions of hospital staffs, and (3) a summary of some of the key issues that psychologists need to understand as they develop working roles in hospital settings. These include the following: laws, bylaws, rules, and regulations; the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals (JCAH); and the application and delineation of psychologists' privileges. This chapter is adapted, in large part, from the work of Anthony Sciara (1983). Abstract

(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
