In Chapters XXVI-XXXI, Beers details the abuse of mentally disordered patients in psychiatric hospitals. He discusses the lack of sanitary dining facilities and lack of food, denial of communication with family and the outside world and other mental abuse, confiscation of letters detailing abuse, actual physical abuse by attendants and physicians, involuntary commitment, and the need for individual rather than collective treatment. The final chapter describes the need for "a changed spiritual attitude toward" patients with mental disorders. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
