The parents confronting a decision about school frequently feel that now that they have been impressed with the seriousness of the situation, they will be able to change everything for the better. This is usually a false hope. It is easy for a parent to overestimate his or her ability suddenly to change set patterns of behavior. And it is easy to underestimate the time, skill, and patience needed in dealing with an emotionally disturbed child. There are times when the disturbance is such that only a round-the-clock therapeutic atmosphere can really be effective. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
