Before proceeding with the line of argument which it is proposed to adopt in the discussion of immortality, the author says a few words regarding the methods of reasoning which have previously prevailed, with a view of pointing out a few of the salient defects in the arguments commonly employed, as viewed from a purely scientific and logical standpoint. The author also tests their validity by the rules of logic. Four leading arguments in favor of immortality are discussed: analogical reasoning, prescriptive authority, philosophical speculation, and instinctive desire. Having found these arguments invalid or inconclusive from a scientific standpoint, he inquires what science has to offer in their place. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
