In psychiatry, therapy and history-taking go hand in hand. Diagnosis and plans for treatment depend upon the results of appraisal of the psychological functioning of the patient. Initial immediate planning, working diagnoses, hospital orders, and instructions to aides and nurses must often be formulated after brief contact with the patient.
