Psychological perspectives on human diversity in America.Lesbian and gay male dimensions in the psychological study of human diversity.

Psychological perspectives on human diversity in America.: Lesbian and gay male dimensions in the... Sexual orientation has become an aspect of the psychological study of human diversity during the last few years. We survey this emerging field from the perspective of four main themes: (a) the meaning of sexual orientation and why it is relevant to the psychological understanding of people; (b) the development of gay and lesbian identity within a multicultural society; (c) differences between lesbians and gay men; and (d) the impact of sexual orientation on two central themes of human development (relationships and parenting). Our basic assumption is that an understanding of sexual orientation will enhance psychological research and practice by reducing heterosexist bias, will increase the perception of similarity and appreciation of difference among those who differ in sexual orientation, and will support efforts to remove the stigma and discrimination against lesbians and gay men. Abstract
