Some Personal Memories of Research

Some Personal Memories of Research . 6 7 8 to 12 13 14 15 16 BEGINNINGS My father was the' first of seven children born on a farm in central Wisconsin that my grandparents had homesteaded shortly after they had arrived from Norway. Dad graduated from high school in the nearby village of Amherst. He then studied electrical engineering at Lawrence College in Appleton for two years. After that he joined the Navy and served on the old battleship Texas as chief electrician. Having been honorably discharged from the Navy, he married an Amherst girl, Mabel Foxen. Together they settled in the beautiful little town of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, on the western shore of Lake Michigan. There Dad organized and built the Oslo Power and Light Company, which consisted of a dam and an electrical generator ANDERSON that supplied electricity to its network of power lines connecting the many small towns and farms of Manitowoc County. He also established the Anderson Electric Company to wire subscribers' buildings and to sell and repair the electrical fixtures and appliances they would need. As a result, I grew up not only with electrical toys, but with some knowledge of generators and motors, power lines, and transformers.
