Book Review by Selin Çag ˘ atay Department of Gender Studies Central European University, Budapest, Hungary Serpil Çakır is an established gender scholar in Turkey well-known for her ground- breaking research on Ott oman women’s activism (1994) that shed much-needed light on women’s struggle for rights before the foundation of the Turkish Republic. Sim- ilarly to Çakır’s previous work, her latest book serves as a great contribution to the scholarship on Turkish women’s history. As a political scientist Çakır structures her book around the broad question of why contemporary Turkish politics is marked by women’s persistently low level of political representation. In her search for an answer Çakır does a tremendous work of collecting and interpreting a wide range of historical and contemporary sources, the most important being seventy-fi ve in-depth interviews she conducted with women parliamentarians who entered the Parliament in the 1999, 2002, and 2007 elections.
