Hutter, Adam als Gärtner und König with Samuel as the one responsible for this new development, i.e. he «opened the door»? Finally, the distribution of <<ward>> (dbr') is noteworthy. At the beginning of the chapter it occurs only in v. 1; it is rare indeed! But beginning with v. 7, it occurs thirteen times (fourteen times if 4:1a is included). The occurance in v. 7 is the note on Samuel's Iack of knowledge of Yahweh's ward. Vv. 9 and 10, with Eli and Samuel speaking respectively, reflect lsrael's hope for Yahweh to restore communication with Israel. Yahweh is the speaker in vv. 11-12, where dbr occurs twice. Finally, in vv. 16ft. the ward occurs eight times (again, nine tim es if 4:1 b is included). Yahweh's <<Ward>> is no Ionger rare. San Francisco, April 30, 1985. Donald W. Wicke.
