Dynasty and Divinity: Ife Art in Ancient Nigeria. By Henry John Drewal & Enid Schildkrout.... The publication is a catalogue of an exhibition and is made up of two essays, `Ife Art in West Africa: An Introduction to the Exhibition' authored by Enid Schildkrout, and `The Splendour of Ancient Ife: Art in an Early West African State', authored by Henry John Drewal. The book, being a catalogue, is well illustrated with very high-quality photographs, maps and line drawings, though figures 6, 7 and 15 have no scales. Schildkrout, in her chapter, provides general background to Ife art noting, among others, that works of art had often been found by chance at sites that `have been continuously inhabited for centuries, making it difficult to determine their original contexts' (p. 4). These sites include Wunmonije Compound, where in 1938 a group of naturalistic copper-alloy figures and a half-figure of a king were found, and Ita Yemoo, where a copper-alloy couple, the full-standing figure of an Oni and several scepters with gagged human heads were discovered in 1959. In both instances the objects were uncovered in the course of digging foundations for houses. It is further stated that some of the objects had been preserved in the palace and in shrines.
