From Lake to Sand. The Archaeology of Farafra Oasis Western desert, Egypt . By Barbara Barich,... Book Review This book constitutes a serious attempt to document and study the prehistoric archaeology of an Egyptian oasis and its outskirts. The presentation of the Farafra material is a full and competent account of the fieldwork carried out by the Italian Archaeological Mission of the University of Rome "La Sapienza" in the Farafra oasis between 1990 and 2005 (excluding more recent fieldwork). Although a number of preliminary papers have appeared since the beginning of the mission, this is the first monographic edition including full site reports and a number of comprehensive papers. Barbara Barich and Giulio Lucarini currently direct this project that was founded as an Italian-Egyptian cooperation by Barich and Fekri Hassan. Together with Mohamed Hamdan, they are responsible for the editing of this volume. This voluminous book is addressed to the scholarly audience of Saharan archaeology, with great emphasis on geo-archaeology and archaeobotany. The publication signals an internationally engaged project, with the participation of numerous experts. A brief review cannot hope to fully cover a work as complex as this. The more than 500 pages of the book comprise 21 chapters organized in seven parts. No less than 28 authors have contributed to the present http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of African Archaeology Brill
