This edited monograph presents the results of a decadelong archaeological project exploring the evolutionary adaptations of Early Pleistocene hominids at the site of Peninj in northern Tanzania. Palaeoanthropological interest in Peninj began in 1963, but archaeological exploration remained low-level due to competing research interests at the East African sites of Olduvai Gorge and Koobi Fora. Intensive fieldwork at Peninj was effectively shelved, and it remained in relative academic obscurity. The sustained efforts of Domínguez-Rodrigo et al presented in this volume mark the end of superficial and punctuated interest in Peninj, and firmly situate it as a key Early Stone Age site. Located to the west of Lake Natron, the Peninj Group sediments are exceptional in preserving a ca 1.6­1.2 Myr landsurface that extends laterally for about 1 km2, certifying its description as a palaeolandscape.
