Once a large tributary of the Nile and an open route between the Nile valley and the central Sahara, the Wadi Howar has been the backbone of a humid environment in the Western Sudan for several millennia. Since 1980, it has been the research focus of twoCologne based projects, B.O.S. (Besiedlungsgeschichte der Ost-Sahara) and ACACIA (Arid Climate, Adaptation and Cultural Innovation in Africa). Friederike Jesses book is one in a prestigious series of publications dedicated to the numerous sites discovered in this part of the Eastern Sahara. Although other aspects of Rahib 80/87 are considered, the central topic of the book is the famous Wavy Line type of decoration. Indeed, the archaeological sites of Wadi Howar are just the starting point for a detailed examination of the various facets of Early Khartoum types of decoration and their development over a large area of North Africa.
