Diesem Beitrag liegt der Vortrag zugrunde, den der Verfasser am 28. 04. 2017 vor Vertretern der Ungarischen Griechisch-Katholischen Kirche in Debrecen/Ungarn gehalten hat.1IntroductionPope John XXIII declared in the Encyclical Ad Petri Cathedram (1959) the adaptation of the discipline of the Church to the needs and challenges of our times (aggiornamento) one of the principal goals of the upcoming Vat II.1 The Pope underlines the necessary unity of the Church: unitas doctrinae, regiminis et cultus, particularly in view of the striving for the unity of the Church (ecumenism). At the same time, he himself sets a good example of what the aggiornamento implies for the unity of the Church: referring to the “unitas doctrinae”, the Pope encourages the theologians to foster their investigations, since the doctrine includes many elements that are “non omnino certa”, and an open discussion would contribute to a fuller understanding of the revealed truth.2 And in view of the “unitas cultus”, John XXIII proclaimed that this unity non prohibet quominus varii in Catholica Ecclesia habeantur ac probentur ritus, quibus eadem pulchrior splendeat, et quasi filia Summi Regis videatur circumamicta varietatibus (cf.
