At the same time, he himself sets a good example of what the aggiornamento implies for the unity of the Church: referring to the “unitas doctrinae”, the Pope encourages the theologians to foster their investigations, since the doctrine includes many elements that are “non omnino certa”, and an open discussion would contribute to a fuller understanding of the revealed truth.2 And in view of the “unitas cultus”, John XXIII proclaimed that this unity non prohibet quominus varii in Catholica Ecclesia habeantur ac probentur ritus, quibus eadem pulchrior splendeat, et quasi filia Summi Regis videatur circumamicta varietatibus (cf.
