Abstract

21 4 AUSTRIAN HISTORY YEARBOOK, VOL. XXXI (2000) destruction of Czechoslovakia in 1938 smashed what little scope was left for joint action among the successor states. There is, unfortunately, no conclusion tying together the themes and arguments de- veloped in the individual chapters of the book, and a more detailed introduction iden- tifying the main issues of controversy and locating the contributions in the broader historiography would be useful. However, these omissions should not distract from the significant depth that the original research presented in Osterreich und die Tsche- choslowakei adds to the literature. The student of Central Europe will find this a valuable collection. Max-Stephan Schulze London School of Economics Welzig, Elisabeth. Die Bewaltigung der Mitte. Ernst Manheim: Soziologe und Anthropologe. Vienna: Bohlau, 1997. Pp . 292, illus. 6S 398, DM 58, sfr 52,50. No one who reads this sympathetic biography will have cause to wonder why Ernst Manheim adheres to the principle of affirmation—that good ultimately triumphs over evil. A Central European of Jewish origin, he escaped the Holocaust. Twice driven into exile, he found a sanctuary in Midwestern America. Born in 1900, he is alive and in possession of his faculties.
