Professors Guidero, MacDougall, and Hinlicky have each given responses to the book that are both thought- ful and encouraging, and it is an honor to engage with them. Before speaking to each response in turn, I begin with some more general comments. A theme that comes up repeatedly in the responses is the book’s confessional location. Where is this book coming from, theologically, and for whom is it written? MacDougall reads THSCE as primarily “aimed at . . . Protestant Christian academic theologians” who are suspicious of theological engagement with experience, especially in the aftermath of Karl Barth’s great Nein against all forms of subjectivism in theology.
