Book Review: Engage: A Theological Field Education Toolkit

Book Review: Engage: A Theological Field Education Toolkit ATR/99.4 Book Reviews 829 Engage: A Theological Field Education Toolkit. Edited by Matthew Floding. Lanham, Md.: Rowman and Littlefield, 2017. x + 170 pp. $24.00 (paper). Field education, or contextual education and formation for ministry, is a place of deep learning and integration. Academic instruction, identity formation, skill building, contextual analysis and intervention intersect with the questions of what is God doing today—among the people and in my growth toward ministry. Engage provides a compass for individual and con- gregational development in these areas and multiple maps for navigating the bumps, twists, and smoother places where learning, service, and reflection intersect. During the nineteen years that I served as a seminary director of field education I wish I had this book to help guide students and supervisors as they navigated congregations and other ministry settings. More than twenty authors, representing differing denominations, edu- cational settings, and theological persuasions, contribute to this book. Their differences in perspective and experience parallels the assumption that con- text matters when doing and learning about ministry. The book’s first eight chapters treat foundational matters: what field education is, the mentoring/ supervising relationship, reading the context, ethical considerations for rela- tionships of ministry and learning, http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Anglican Theological Review SAGE

Field education, or contextual education and formation for ministry, is a place of deep learning and integration. Academic instruction, identity formation, skill building, contextual analysis and intervention intersect with the questions of what is God doing today—among the people and in my growth toward ministry. During the nineteen years that I served as a seminary director of field education I wish I had this book to help guide students and supervisors as they navigated congregations and other ministry settings. More than twenty authors, representing differing denominations, edu- cational settings, and theological persuasions, contribute to this book.
