At a recent meeting of clergy about an upcoming regional confirmation, it was noted that a request had come from diocesan staff to include a song in Spanish. The responses were a mixture of bemusement and skepticism: Why should we do this? Is this authentic to our (mostly Anglo) communities? Isn’t this just a token (hence condescending) nod to cultural diversity? Her worship vocabulary may seem foreign to those from more liturgical traditions—“worship leader” is more likely to be a band leader in front of an auditorium of worshipers than a presider at a eucharistic table. But she has much to say to all of us who are seeking an authentic expression in our own communities of a more global, multicultural church.
