Book Reviews ORGANIZATION & ENVIRONMENT BOOK REVIEWS / June 2002 Gert Spaargaren, Arthur P. J. Mol, and Frederick H. Buttel (Eds.). Environment and Global Modernity. London: Sage, 2000. This book consists of papers presented at a conference held by the Research GrouponEnvironmentandSociety, meetingundertheauspicesoftheInternational Sociological Association. The conference aimed to discuss theories of the environ ment and society to address what the organizers perceived as a lack of common con ceptual ground in the field. However, it should be emphasized that two of the editors and several contributors are advocates of a particular approach termed ecological modernization theory, which they see as providinga solution to the problem they identify. Before proceedingto a description, analysis, and evaluation of this theory as it is presented here, it might be helpful to situate its emergence in the context of other approaches to the explanation of the relationship between society and the environment. In chapter 2 of this volume, Buttel points to the failure of classical sociology to address environmental issues. As he acknowledges, this was largely due to the way the discipline developed in seeking to distinguish social explanations from biologi- cal and psychological ones, for it is possible to find within the writings of Marx http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Organization & Environment SAGE
