ORGANIZATION & ENVIRONMENT Suntree, W/illiamson September / S1999 AVING THE LAST OPEN SPACES Art and the Natural Environment An Urban Trek to Save the Last Open Spaces SUSAN SUNTREE JAN WILLIAMSON ver 4 days in April 1997, a small band of men, women, and children O walked across Los Angeles led by four giant puppets named Earth, Water, Air, and Fire. In 1998, another intrepid band of ecopilgrims made the trek joined by three more puppets: Spirit of the Grasslands, Spirit of the River, and Spirit of the Wetlands. We followed a longer route close to the Los Angeles River that took us through diverse neighborhoods and nearly to downtown before we turned toward the ocean, following Ballona Creek, to the Ballona Wetlands. Traveling by foot the distance that a car might travel in an hour, we measured the city with our bodies and claimed the urban landscape by experiencing it step-by-step. With our banners, dream catchers, street theater, teach-ins, kazoos, drums, headdresses, and bullhorns, we spoke to the city in words, images, and stories about the critical need to save the remnants of open space in Los Angeles.
