From the sciences to philosophy, applied design to politics, indeed, in almost any discipline we can think of, anima- tion as a visual communication form and cultural phenomenon is both ubiquitous and pervasive; few topics and themes have escaped being addressed by the artists and filmmakers who work with its various techniques and media forms. This Special Issue – New Perspectives on Animation Historiography, from Guest Editors Dr Rada Bieberstein and Dr Erwin Feyersinger – is also framed through an interdisciplinary lens. Both editors are active specialist scholars working in animation studies in the German-speaking com- munity, a field that has flourished in the last decade in part due to their engagement.
