Dental College and Hospital, Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, India ABSTRA CT Background: Dental plaque (oral biofi lm) formation is a dynamic and complex process involving many stages, from the adsorption of salivary pellicle to bacterial accumulation and growth. Saliva is important for oral and dental health, chewing sugar-free gums is a convenient way to increase salivary fl ow. Aim: To evaluate the effect of chewing sugar-free and sugar containing gums on dental plaque. Materials and Methods: A concurrent parallel randomized control trial was designed involving 20 subjects, divided into 2 groups of sugar containing and sugar free chewing gums, aged 20-25 years. The subjects were asked to chew one piece of chewing gum for 30 minutes 3 times a day after meal and to suspend all oral hygiene practices like brushing, mouth rinsing for 4 days.
