Vijayan K. Pillai University of Texas at Arlington Prof. Lyle W. Shannon died on December 20, 2005 at the age of 85. Dr. Shannon was a Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of Iowa. He was born in Storm Lake, Iowa in 1920. He used to remind us that in the same year the nineteenth amendment was ratified. His wife, Dr. Magdalene Shannon, author of a well-known book entitled “Jean Price-Mars, the Haitian Elite and the American Occupation” died in September of 2001. He is survived by two daughters, Mary Shannon Will of Calgary, Canada; Susan Michelle Shannon of Mission Hills, California, and two sons, Robert William Shannon of Seattle, Washington and John Thomas Shannon of Missoula Montana. I should also mention his cat “Cretin” who also became a member of the literati in Lyle’s company. Lyle received his BA Degree from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, in 1942, the M.A. in 1947, and the Ph.D. in I95 I fiom the University of Washington in Seattle. During World War I1 he served in the Navy, rising to the rank of Lt. Commander.
