ORGANIZATION & ENVIRONMENT Morris / INTERST / September ATE1999 INTO THE WILDERNESS Trailhead Near the End of Western History DAVID COPLAND MORRIS University of Washington, Tacoma am off to Talapus Lake for a day hike in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness I Area, a trip I’ve taken many times. There’s nothing extraordinary about this excursion—put on the Gortex boots, buckle the nylon fanny pack, fill the plas- tic water bottles, and grab a couple of Power Bars. Then down the elevator to the underground garage, into the car, out through the heart of downtown Seattle, and on to Interstate 90. Twenty-five minutes east to the edge of megalopolis, 25 more up to the exit for Forest Service road 9030, then 3 miles fishtailing up the gravel to the trailhead. Forty-five minutes of hiking to the small weathered plaque marking the wilderness boundary. A hundred yards farther into the wilderness lies the rocky bowl of the pristine lake, mostly unaltered by the human will.
