Smallholder Farmers' Perception and Experience on Importance, Consumption and Marketing of Soya... Soya bean is a very important leguminous crop in the fight against malnutrition and depletion of soil fertility. The study was conducted to assess the farmers’ perceptions of the importance of soya beans, their household consumption levels and the local soya bean market. A semi-structured questionnaire was administered over 186 randomly selected respondent farmers in three zones. Respondents belonged to 33 peasant associations. Farmers ranked crop rotation as the most important benefit derived from producing soya beans, followed by improvement in soil fertility. Roasted soya bean, bread, stew and sauces, and soya milk were some of the most important food items prepared from soya bean by respondent farmers. The majority of respondents (74.7%) reported that consuming soya bean has no drawback. The greatest proportion of respondents (42.9%) indicated that they do not sell soya bean at all, while 53.4 per cent sell their soya bean produce in the local market. The highest proportion (31.6%) of the respondents sold their soya bean directly to the consumers. Enhancing the local consumption, processing and the market price of soya bean are some of the most important strategies to enhance soya bean production by smallholder farmers.
