Breese We must set goals for ourselves that take our insights beyond the narrow confines in which we work. We need to search for ways to pull ourselves out of our routines; we need to grow (Garrison, 1991 ; p. 100). Those words were spoken by Howard Garrison during his presidential address to SAS in 199 1. In my presidential address today, I will use his words to he my discussion of the Society for Applied Sociology. This address, formulated by the words and insights of past presidential addresses, and drawing upon related literature, will explore our organization as we celebrate 20 years of meeting formally. The key contention I offer to this assembly is the need to engage in strategic planning for our society. While incorporating points from past presidential addresses, I seek to lay the ground work for developing a plan to aid us in reflecting on, renewing, and hopefully expanding the promise and potential of the Society for Applied Sociology.
