The Concept of Local Knowledge in Cyclonic Disaster Management: A Review on Bangladesh Experience Incorporation of local knowledge in the development programmes has been a burning issue in the developing countries including Bangladesh. In its entire development sector, local knowledge has become very fashionable, but sometimes without fuller understanding of the concept. There is also a growing demand of the incorporation of local knowledge in the disaster management policies, which has come basically from the ‘failure’ of existing disaster management programmes. This paper deals with the concept of local knowledge and its application in the context of cyclonic disaster management programmes in Bangladesh. 1.0 Introduction In the last couple of decades, local knowledge and practices have been getting increasing attention from academics as well as development practitioners. However, in the case of disaster management, in terms of major institutional arrangement, local knowledge has not received its full recognition as yet, although a considerable number of studies, from both academic and practitioners’ papers, are increasingly emphasising this. A fuller understanding of using local knowledge in the case of disaster management programme or in policy issues is largely absent as focus on disaster management has always been and almost remained on the ‘technical and scientific’ understanding of natural hazards.
