Communal living has not had a good press. At the worst, it ends in a hail of gun- fire or mass suicide and at the best in a morass of emotional conflicts, jealousies, and unpaid debts. Academic critics of utopian ideas have been often hostile and, at the best, ambivalent, seeinglittle relevance in the late 20th century for such imprac- tical ideas as communal living(Armytage, 1961; Goodwin & Taylor, 1982; Levin, 1994; Levitas, 1990). These two books hope to redress such misconceptions, through examination of utopian ideas and their expression in communal livingin the first half of the 20th century in Britain. The first book, Utopian England, is by Professor Dennis Hardy, the foremost English scholar on utopian movements, which updates his previous work on 19th-century communities (Hardy, 1979). The second book, Utopia Bri- tannica, is by Chris Coates, a leadingactivist with longexperience of communal living.
