An 800 call-in number was left on answering machines or with household members to facilitate interviewing for the second wave of a small panel study. The technique helped in interviewing young adult panel members; 11.6 percent of the completed interviews came from call-ins over the 800 line during the three week calling period. Based on this study, it appears that a toll free call-in number can facilitate interviewing, especially in a panel study. Future studies are needed to establish an experimental design to test the effectiveness of the call-in technique on larger and more varied samples for longer calling periods.
