[Different models are used to explain the relationship between dose of a drug and its effect. The nonlinear or biphasic curve has been of particular relevance to homeopathy and arose from the work of Arndt and Schulz, who proposed that low doses could stimulate and high doses could inhibit. Schulz used homeopathic dilutions in many of his studies, although he did not consider himself to be a homeopath, while Arndt was better known as a psychiatrist. This did not prevent the two men from being linked to homeopathy, and their work on the relation between dose and response thus became controversial, although much recent science validates their core finding. This chapter describes the background and achievements of Arndt and Schulz and the scientific community’s response to their work. It then discusses other perspectives on dose and possible mechanisms of action of homeopathic remedies. Concepts of hormesis, sensitization, ultramolecular dilution, and nanopharmacology are all discussed.]
