[Three homeopaths have made notable contributions to cancer research. Oscar Auerbach trained and was later employed at the New York Homeopathic Medical College. Building on epidemiological studies in Europe, his research was the first to demonstrate tissue damage in the lungs proportionate to the extent of smoking. His work is regarded as among the most important pieces of research to establish a causative relationship between smoking and lung cancer. Charles Cameron, a graduate and dean of Hahnemann, was one of the first to champion cancer as a public health concern, to encourage early diagnosis and treatment, and to recommend the use of Pap test for cervical cancer. He served as medical director and vice-president of the American Cancer Society. Cameron also established the journal CA – A Cancer Journal for Clinicians – which today is the most widely circulated journal of its type. Ita Wegman introduced mistletoe as a treatment for cancer. Two other homeopaths achieved transient fame for supposedly discovering the cause of cancer (Howard Nowell) and for the development of a diagnostic test (Edward Cronin Lowe), although their claims failed to withstand attempts at replication.]
