[On 1 June 1766, the celebrated Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler with his family and household left Berlin to return to Saint Petersburg. Euler had been in the service of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin since 1741, first as Professor of Mathematics, Director of the mathematical section, and eventually as the acting leader of the Academy. The reason behind the move was the long-lasting discord and eventually the complete break-up between Euler and his superior, Frederick II of Prussia.]
