A Corpus-Based Analysis of Discourses on the Belt and Road InitiativeIntroduction

A Corpus-Based Analysis of Discourses on the Belt and Road Initiative: Introduction [A modern-day incarnation of China’s ancient Silk Route, the modern day multi-billion-dollar Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) or the “One Belt One Road” (OBOR) is as legendary as the Eurasian trade routes of the past that brought the riches of the Orient to the West. Indeed, it is more so given China’s present day geostrategic clout and global ambitions. Against this backdrop, the present volume offers rich insights into the perceptions of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) which under the umbrella of BRI symbolizes a vision for regional revival and global leadership. Encompassing trade across land and sea routes spanning multiple nations as well as mega infrastructural investments, BRI represents a colossal effort to promote regional connectivity, policy coordination, people-to-people bonds (cross-culture coordination), trade and financial integration. Adopting a corpus-based critical discourse analysis approach, this book examines a corpus of newspaper articles from Pakistani and Indian publications to gain comparative insights into the ideological construction. Given how CPEC has sent alarm bells ringing amongst regional and international powers that are wary of China’s growing role as a counterweight to the Western world, in particular the US, this book presents policy makers, researchers, and lay readers across disciplines with an accessible and informative empirical account of how CPEC is ideologically constructed by India and Pakistan. These two countries, arch nemeses, are key players on the chessboard of geostrategic relations and power play influenced by the actions of acknowledged and emerging global giants such as the US and China.] http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png

Abstract

[A modern-day incarnation of China’s ancient Silk Route, the modern day multi-billion-dollar Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) or the “One Belt One Road” (OBOR) is as legendary as the Eurasian trade routes of the past that brought the riches of the Orient to the West. These two countries, arch nemeses, are key players on the chessboard of geostrategic relations and power play influenced by the actions of acknowledged and emerging global giants such as the US and China.]
