Chapter 1 Robert J. Kohlenberg, Mavis Tsai, and Jonathan W. Kanter As you begin to read this book, we imagine you are intellectually curious and eager to expand your therapeutic skills. You already may have experience using Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP) and want to delve more deeply, or this may be your first exposure. If you are not sure what FAP is, you may be expecting a behaviorally informed dictionary definition, or you may be seeking an answer that speaks more to your intuition. Consistent with the behavioral approach we take in this book, however, we believe there is no absolute, context-free ‘best’ in terms of definitions, therapeutic interventions or underlying theory. Instead, ‘best’ always depends on what one is attempting to accomplish. FAP is an idiographic therapy that is experienced differently among those who have learned, practiced, received, researched, taught and/or written about it. Thus, we start with a smor ¨ ga˚ sbord of these experiences.
