[Comorbidities are chronic conditions that co-exist with a primary diagnosis of interest. It is often understood that many patients with advanced heart failure frequently have more than one major chronic comorbid condition which are often associated with increased health utilization and increased mortality (Iorio et al., Eur J Heart Fail 20:1257–66, 2018; Koen et al., Int J Cardiol 271:132–9, 2018). Comorbidities are not necessarily a contraindication to LVAD therapy; however, they may impact the postoperative recovery phase, including mobility and wound healing. Prior to LVAD implant, patients must have all major comorbid conditions optimized for successful outcome. This includes but not limited to ensuring optimal end-organ function, glycemic control, elimination of infection, and mental readiness of both patient and caregiver.
