[This book is an exercise in media history — ‘an interdiscipline that brings historical research into dialogue with the unruly tribe of communication theories’.1 As John Nerone reminds us, media history has produced several narratives such as ‘libertarian’, ‘radical’ and ‘technological determinist’, while it has not led to an established ‘grand narrative’ — but rather to a state of anarchy. Our contribution to this ‘intellectual robustness’ is to provide concrete evidence of how journalism as an emerging profession became internationally organized over the past 120 years, seen mainly through the associations founded to promote the interests of journalists around the world. This book is unique; no such history of the movement has so far been published.]
