Abstract

[Alternatives to biomedical diagnosis in mental health care must address the functions diagnoses set out to serve. To implement a shift from a solely biomedical to a psychosocial approach, and to help deliver better, more responsive, more effective, services, we need to reform our systems for identifying, recording and responding to our problems. Significant change is needed, but despite the overwhelming influence that biomedical approaches have on our understanding of the nature of our psychological health, the various laws and policies underpinning our health and social care systems could easily accommodate such changes.]
