[With Descartes, a new conception of what we are takes form. He introduces modified concepts of body and mind, and a third, completely new concept: consciousness. It seems strange that a concept so intimately linked to our self-understanding, did not exist prior to the seventeenth century. In this chapter I will look further into these new concepts, and into the question how Descartes himself, but also later philosophers, dealt with the new concept of consciousness.]
