[This chapter inventories the initial conditions of possibility for the establishment of a proxy colonial settler polity, whose trajectory of emergence and transformation is retraced in the subsequent chapters. Accordingly, it depicts the initial human-environment relations that prevailed during the pre-modern period of Soqotra’s history prior to its incorporation into a state-led modernization process and its subsequent enclosure within a United Nations-designed biodiversity conservation zoning plan and ecotourism economy.
