A Practical Approach to Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Adolescents: Study Skills [Study skills include the competencies associated with acquiring, recording, organizing, synthesizing, remembering, and using information. The goal of cognitive-based study strategies is to guide students to engage in appropriate thinking about information they are required to learn. There is a lacuna of evidence-based CBT studies on effectiveness and efficacy of study skills and learning techniques especially in the last ten years; however, mostly before that period, both laboratory- and classroom-based research have provided evidence supporting the effectiveness of study skills to promote academic competence among students. The chapter aims to review a number of different theoretical perspectives to equip students with study skills to enhance their learning and academic competence. Research-based evidence shows that being motivated and setting short- and long-term goals help in developing good study skills. Some of the well-established techniques for developing good study skills include the SMART technique, The SQ3R method, the ABC approach, time management and dealing with procrastination.
