[On the surface, finding a supervisor may appear a fairly trivial task, but do not take this decision too lightly. This is effectively the first scientific collaboration you will make, and like any effective collaboration you have to be able to work productively with one another. You will meet with this person on a regular basis, plan projects together, conduct experiments together and write scientific papers and grant proposals together; it therefore helps if you actually get along—at least to some extent! Beyond day to day professional responsibilities, your supervisor will also be a mentor, provide pastoral support and importantly be someone you can confide in when times get tough, which they inevitably will at some point.
