[In this chapter, the attempt shall be made to introduce and elucidate the epochal context in which the contemporary economy, polity and social relations fit. This is unequivocally essential for two reasons: (1) that the identity of the contemporary epoch brings to light the social and material transformations that are unique to our own time and thus to our own identity and (2) that the same formidable historical forces that tend to play a part as an arbiter of time also set the threshold on the dynamics of economy, polity, and power relations in our epoch. In what follows, the hint of “disjointed time” will postulate an analytical framework for a historical comparison of two separate phases of capitalism, namely, the age of imperialism—aided by the crutch of colonialism, and the plunder of “raw” and unmediated geography—and the epoch of post-Pax Americana/posthegemonic America, marching into the era of globalization.]
