A Quest for Quality Wine, Every Time.: Root Cause Analysis Applied to Grape Growing and Winemaking [Root cause analysis (RCA) is a set of methodologies to help identify all possible causes of a problem and then determine which one is the most likely root cause. The cause and effect diagram, also known as the fishbone diagram, lays out six major categories of causes which are processes, materials, equipment, people, measurements, and environmental. We have populated a fishbone with typical winemaking subcategories. The “5 Whys” method repeats the question why? up to five times in order to drive deeper toward finding the root cause. This is particularly effective with efforts involving human interaction. Kepner–Tregoe (KT) is a rational analysis method and decision-making process. A KT analysis matrix is built by identifying attributes that are important to you and assigning relative weights in accordance with your values. Both positive attributes that help improve the quality of your wine and negative attributes like risk or uncertainty can be included. Use the best of the best and worst of the worst (BowWow) techniques to identify potential problem causes.
