[Case-based collaborative learning (CBCL) is designed to foster a deep understanding of concepts via critical thinking, discussion, and inquiry. While the CBCL method can be used to teach a single lesson, it was specifically developed in the context of undergraduate medical education with the expectation that students gather in class every day. A CBCL module consists of asynchronous pre-work paired with an interactive classroom discussion. For the discussion, the whole class is divided into sections (40-50 students). Each section is further divided into groups of 3-4 learners. The discussion alternates between small group analysis of the cases/problems followed by a facilitated large group debrief with the entire section. Conceptually, CBCL is inspired by three different teaching formats: the Case Method with its spirited large-group discussions, Problem-Based Learning with its small-group discussions and an emphasis on self-directed learning, and Team-Based LearningTM with its focus on teamwork skills and a scalable, structured approach to collaborative learning. CBCL combines elements from each of these formats with an emphasis on active learning at every step. This chapter compares and contrasts the many influences that were incorporated into this method with the goal for the reader to decide if CBCL might be right for their learners.]
