[The construction of ‘good student’ is the pedagogical ideal of the Sikh Kanya Mahavidyalaya. Students’ habitus is shaped by a complex regime of discipline and punishment. They learn to imbibe the school’s dominant ideology in order to gain appreciation. The Khalsa Assembly held each day in the morning, and the school rituals serve as means to understand socialization processes. A ‘disciplined student’ is also a ‘good student and a good citizen’. An ‘ideal student’ retains qualities of a good student and at the same time also subscribes to teachers’ expectations of regularity and punctuality. Finally, a ‘model student’ not only is good and close to the ideal student but also learns to be an all-rounder attaining success in more than regular studies.]
