Kadane, Principles of Uncertainty, Texts in Statistical Science Se- ries, Chapman & Hall/CRC , 2011. pp. xxviii+475, ISBN 978-1-4398- 6161-5 Following the main connecting thread of the personalistic perspec- tive of probability, this textbook by Joseph Kadane constitutes an interest- ing addition to the existing literature. In particular, a good treatment of the supporting arguments behind Bayesian Statistics is always welcomed. With a singular eloquence, ‘Principles of Uncertainty’ covers a considera- ble amount of material in probability and statistics. An appealing aspect, that makes this book special, is its controversial but comprehensive view supporting the theory of statistical reasoning. Clearly, being one of the main promoters of the subjectivistic approach, Kadane’s views are con- spicuous throughout the text. As someone who often undertakes the task of teaching statistics and regularly needs to enter the philosophical debate justifying the various ap- proaches to statistics, I believe that this book can be very useful. Whether one shares Kadane’s subjectivistic perspective or prefers to be less radical, his introspective approach is sometimes all that is needed to recognize the importance of foundations when learning and applying statistics.
