[Southeast Asia is the earliest and arguably the most important target of China ‘s regional economic diplomacy. China ‘s economic diplomacy towards ASEAN, in particular through CAFTA, is labelled by some as a ‘charm offensive’ and by others an effort to revive the ancient tributary system.1 At the 2012 Forum on the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area, Xi Jinping, Chinese vice president and president-in-waiting, underlined that, among ASEAN ‘s dialogue partners, China was the first to have established a strategic partnership and the first to have started the FTA process; that this FTA had laid a solid foundation for ‘ASEAN- centred regional integration and cooperation’.2 In some places in Southeast Asia, on the other hand, there are calls for renegotiating the deal and protests over its impact on small farmers.]
