[After entering the middle-income stage of development and due to a series of reforms since the 1980s, China is now at the beginning of a transitional period. With the advance of population aging, China’s elderly support mechanisms exhibit both traditional and modern characteristics, as well as both similarities and differences between urban and rural areas. In this stage, China should focus on such problems as limited coverage and the inadequate support of the old-age security system as well as the shrinking pool of adult children to be caregivers. In order to raise the living standards of the elderly, a multi-tiered elderly security system which focuses on both family and public support should be established.]
