[This chapter offers an analysis of the emergence and importance of hospitality within the Hizmet movement. While undeniably affirming the importance of tolerance in a world filled with intolerance, its understanding of tolerance can be seen as entailing a call to persons to practice and promote the far more robust virtue of hospitality and a range of related virtues. It is argued that the Hizmet movement is best understood as a virtue-based movement of social interactions and practices. The influence of Islam and Sufism on the Hizmet conception of the virtues in general and hospitality in particular is developed. It is argued that the dialogue, educational, and service intiatives of the Hizmet movement are best understood through the lens of virtue formation and promotion directed to human development and peace.]
